INTRODUCTION — Vasectomy is a safe, permanent birth control method for men. In the United States, one out of five men over age 35 has had a vasectomy. Sterilization (mainly female sterilization) is the most widely used contraceptive method among married couples in the United States. About 4 million are performed worldwide each year.
A Vasectomy is a form of birth control in which the tubes which carry the sperm from the testicles are divided, in order to prevent fertility. The procedure is done in the office (under local anesthesia) and takes about twenty minutes to complete. Compared to "tubal ligation" for women, vasectomy is one of the safest and easiest forms of contraception, with over 500,000 procedures done annually. It is highly effective, though not perfect, with an extremely low failure rate.
Compared to the traditional incisional technique, the No-scalpel Vasectomy usually takes less time, causes less discomfort and may have lower rates of bleeding and infection. Recovery following the procedure is usually complete in two to three days. Most patients should wait to have intercourse for a week after the procedure (You should feel no discomfort).

The No-Scalpel Vasectomy (NSV) is unique in that there is no incision made in the scrotum. Instead, pointed forceps separate the layers of tissue and make a single opening less than a quarter of an inch in diameter in the middle of the scrotum. The procedure generally takes less than 15 minutes. Recovery is faster than with the standard vasectomy. Bleeding, swelling, infection and other complications are generally less. So is the amount of resultant discomfort after the procedure.

Vasectomy is used as a means of contraception in many parts of the world. A total of about 50 million men have had a vasectomy--a number that corresponds to roughly 5 percent of all married couples of reproductive age. In comparison, about 15 percent of couples rely on female sterilization for birth control.
